One of two UT Austin undergraduate students selected each semester to complete this fellowship. Reported on investigative and breaking news stories with a focus on the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.

Reported on news and cultural events in Texas, proofread and fact-checked articles, provided live coverage of local events.

THE NEW YORK TIMES — freelance writer

(2017)

Contributed reporting from Sutherland Springs following the mass shooting, researched and reported on an interactive longform piece on the identification of migrants who die crossing the Texas/Mexico border, and reported from Austin when news broke of a stabbing attack on UT's campus.

THE KNIGHT CENTER FOR JOURNALISM IN THE AMERICAS — writer

(spring 2017)

Provided coverage for the annual International Symposium on Online Journalism by writing features and recaps on panelists and events.

UT NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF HISPANIC JOURNALISTS — founder, president

(2016-2017)

Founded the first official student chapter of NAHJ at UT. Created semester projects where members worked with local professionals to gain experience freelancing. Reached out to other Hispanic/Latino organizations on campus to raise more than $1200 for Puerto Rico relief.

RIO OLYMPICS — writer

(August 2016)

Was one of four UT students selected to report on the Rio Olympics. Reported on a variety of sports for seven different outlets across the country, including the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the San Antonio Express-News. Also volunteered for the Rio2016 English site as a live blog editor and photo editor, providing live coverage and short posts when on assignment.

THE DAILY TEXAN — managing editor, Life&Arts editor, writer

(2014-2016)

Managed a staff of 11 departments to create daily online content and a weekly paper by deadline as managing editor. Edited stories, published content and organized a print and online package of 30 articles for the 50th anniversary of the UT tower shooting.
